Arabic letters change form depending on their position in a word. Here are examples for the first 5 letters:

Letters like ح (Deep Ha), خ (Kha), ع (Ayn) and غ (Ghayn) come from deep in the throat. Listen repeatedly and mimic the sound slowly.
The letters ص, ض, ط, ظ are 'emphatic' — pronounced with the tongue retracted. They sound heavier than their plain equivalents.
6 letters (أ د ذ ر ز و) never connect to the following letter. They only connect to the letter before them.
