Harakat & Reading

Learn the Arabic vowel marks that tell you how to pronounce each letter. Mastering harakat is essential for correct Quranic recitation.

Lesson 2.1

Fatha — Short A Vowel

بَ

Fatha (الفتحة)

A small diagonal stroke above the letter (◌َ). Pronounced like a short 'a' as in 'cat' — the most common Arabic vowel.

بَ ba Bā + Fatha
كَ ka Kāf + Fatha
رَحْمَة raḥmah Mercy
كَتَبَ kataba He wrote
Remember: Fatha is the most common harakat. It sits above the letter and gives it a short 'a' sound. If you see a letter with no harakat, it often has a fatha in spoken Arabic.
Lesson 2.2

Kasra — Short I Vowel

بِ

Kasra (الكسرة)

A small stroke below the letter (◌ِ). Pronounced like a short 'i' as in 'bit'. It 'breaks' the letter downward.

بِ bi Bā + Kasra
بِسْمِ bismi In the name of
رَبِّ rabbi My Lord
عِلْم ʿilm Knowledge
Remember: The word بِسْمِ (bismi — 'in the name of') contains two kasras. This is one of the first words you'll recognize in Quranic recitation.
Lesson 2.3

Damma — Short U Vowel

بُ

Damma (الضمة)

A small hook above the letter (◌ُ), shaped like a miniature wāw. Pronounced like a short 'u' as in 'put'.

بُ bu Bā + Damma
كُلّ kull Every / All
رُوحٌ rūḥun Soul
قُرْآن qurʾān The Quran
Remember: The word قُرْآن (Quran) begins with qāf + damma — pronounced 'qu'. Recognizing this mark helps you read this sacred word correctly.
Lesson 2.4

Sukoon — No Vowel

بْ

Sukoon (السكون)

A small circle above the letter (◌ْ) indicating no vowel follows — the letter is 'silent' or stops abruptly. It creates closed syllables.

بِسْمِ bismi Sīn has sukoon
قُلْ qul Say (command)
أَلْحَمْدُ al-ḥamdu All praise
عَبْد ʿabd Servant / Slave of Allah
Remember: Sukoon means 'stillness'. The letter with this mark has no following vowel — it closes the syllable. Notice سْ in بِسْمِ (bismi) — the sīn stops cleanly.
Lesson 2.5

Tanween — Nunation

بً بٍ بٌ

Tanween (التنوين)

Double harakat at the end of a word, adding an 'n' sound. It marks indefinite nouns — like 'a' in English (a book, a house).

Type Symbol Example Reading Meaning
Tanween Fath ◌ً كِتَابًا kitāban a book (obj.)
Tanween Kasr ◌ٍ كِتَابٍ kitābin of a book
Tanween Damm ◌ٌ كِتَابٌ kitābun a book (subj.)
Remember: When you see double harakat at the end of a word (◌ً ◌ٍ ◌ٌ), add an 'n' sound. These are extremely common in Quranic recitation.
