Quranic Verse Comprehension

Understanding Quranic Verses

Using the words and roots you have learned, comprehend these well-known verses — every word explained.

Surah Al-Fatiha 1:1 بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillāhi r-rahmāni r-rahīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Words: بِسْمِ (in the name of) + اللَّه (Allah) + الرَّحْمَٰن (Most Gracious) + الرَّحِيم (Merciful)
Both الرَّحْمَٰن and الرَّحِيم come from root ر-ح-م. الرَّحْمَٰن = universal mercy for all creation; الرَّحِيم = special mercy for believers.
Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1 قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
Qul huwa Allāhu ahad

Say: He is Allah, the One (absolute, unique in His oneness).

Words: قُلْ (Say!) + هُوَ (He) + اللَّهُ (Allah) + أَحَدٌ (the One, Unique)
قُلْ is a divine command — appears 332 times. أَحَدٌ means absolute, incomparable oneness — stronger than the ordinary word for one.
Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) — opening اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ
Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa l-hayyu l-qayyūm

Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.

Words: لَا إِلَٰهَ (no deity) + إِلَّا هُوَ (except Him) + الْحَيُّ (Ever-Living) + الْقَيُّومُ (Self-Subsisting)
Ayat al-Kursi is the greatest verse in the Quran. الْحَيُّ = Ever-Living, never sleeps or dies; الْقَيُّومُ = everything depends on Him while He depends on nothing.
Surah Al-Fatiha 1:5 إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
Iyyāka na'budu wa-iyyāka nasta'īn

You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

Words: إِيَّاكَ (You alone) + نَعْبُدُ (we worship, from ع-ب-د) + نَسْتَعِينُ (we seek help)
نَعْبُدُ = 'we worship' — directly from the ع-ب-د root you just learned! This verse is the essence of tawheed: worship and reliance on Allah alone.
